Originally constructed in 1926, Olds Elementary School was in danger of being razed and replaced. But the community rallied to save a piece of their history and today hundreds of students, teachers and parents walk through the halls of this transformed school. There has been an overwhelming response to the renovation and addition from the community, staff and students, each of whom has expressed tremendous sense of pride in the “New Olds.”

The renovation and addition was featured by the National Trust as an historic school preservation success story. For further project information and to view the article in its entirety, please see the attached article below.

This has been especially important in the firm’s education projects, where well-thought out design choices make a positive impact on learning environments, set an example for future generations, and save taxpayers money in land, energy and water costs.

NC Magazine recently interviewed Neal Conley, AIA, a principal and project architect at Small Kane, on how the firm seeks to provide “A Green Education.” The article, posted below, discusses what area firms are doing to promote green technologies in school design, and it features information for the Barwell Road Elementary School and Community Center project designed for Wake County Public Schools and City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department.
